Subject: AC Expansion Valve Leaking Oil
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Working on my '86 weekender AC system while I have the ceiling cabinet out. When I bought it, the AC compressor was not functioning due to lack of freon. The expansion valve and its cover was soaked with oil when I took the cabinet down. Did the R134 conversion in a can route, and the compressor fired up. Evaporator got really cold. Compressor is making a bad sounding noise though. It is a light sound like if you held a screwdriver or piece of sheet metal against the spinning crankshaft pulley. Definately a scraping type sound. Any ideas on that sound? I put in 8oz of the R134 oil. Do I need more to account for the long hoses in the vanagon? Next day, the expansion valve has oil on it again. It appears to be leaking from the small end where there is a brass looking piece inserted in a bore of some sort. I don't suppose this can be fixed?

Thanks for any advice, Edward
