I don't think turning the engine backwards would damage it engine.  The
direction of the impact would not be as important as the severity.  I would
be concerned about the transmission gears, differential, seals, perhaps the
camshaft gear in this case, since the van was suddenly jerked back 10 feet
in second gear.
