Peter; I know the crankcase ventilation is a closed system on digifant system. Leaving the case open to the atmosphere will allow unmetered air to be drawn in to the throttle body. This will cause idle problems akin to any vacuum leak. Even if no such problems occur for you I would seal the opening to prevent unwanted debris to be drawn in.
