Subject: The best engine conversion?
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Here's one from a newbie (I don't own one yet, but I'm looking). In my search I have seen several Vanagons with interesting engine conversions and was wondering what was considered the best. Since the native power plant is considered, how might I say it -- a challenge.

The Porsche 911 engine is easily the most exotic and has the highest drool factor. Other than the 911 engine's reliability, is the conversion good? Do the two mate up well? Also, I have seen several GTi conversions, more than you would think. But since the GTi engine is not a flat boxer style, is that a good choice? And the most reliable and sensible seems to be a Subaru-based conversion. But again do the 2 systems fit well together? I have also read about other engine conversion oddities, with extensive engine bay modifications and also transmission upgrades (?).

Of course, the quality of the conversion weighs heavily in this choice, but what if that wasn't really a factor. They were all converted with similar engineering and mechanical excellence. What do you think would be the best choice in a perfect Vanagon and why?
