I recently stripped out our skylight knob.  I went to the bathroom and
grabbed the Vasoline then down to the shop and grabbed the epoxy for
plastic.  Back to the Vanagon where I unscrewed and removed the skylight
knob.  After cleaning off any fragments of shreaded plastic from the shaft
splines I applied some Vasoline to the splines and then wiped off the
excess.  I did the same to the screw.  Then I mixed some epoxy and coated
the area of mostly non existant splines on the skylight knob.  I then
pushed the knob onto the shaft making sure I didn't get any epoxy onto the
internal threads of the shaft.  After inserting in tightening down the
screw I left it for a day.  I haven't had a problem since (five weeks ago.)
