Needless to say, I am highly desirous to know the answer (about the
rollover angle for Syncro Westfalia).

I believe the only valid test is with a Westy with a full water tank and
driver in the drivers seat and actually tip it over, securing it by
straps from above so the van doesn't hit the ground. Possibly somebody
has done this test in Europe, as I am fairly certain nobody has done it
in the Continental US.

Here is a very funny link Joel Walker sent me yesterday that shows how
*not* to do the test.

As I have stated previously, I stop driving when my van gets to 20
degrees of angle and then I try to figure out what to do. It would be of
great benefit to me to know that I could go to, say, 35 degrees of
angle.

Someone once sent me a theoretical argument that the vanagon was a
kleenex box on its side and that it would be safe to assume it will tip
over at the same angle that a kleenex box will tip over. The Kleenex box
dimensions are a bit worse than a Vanagon's. According to this theory, we
should be safe to about 45 degrees or so. Still, at only 20 degrees I
become extremely disconcerted.
We've had ours over something like 25 degrees, and it stayed
put, while Derek watched from behind. (Maybe it was the mud suction that
was holding us in place.)
