Subject: Hidden alarm - short? or disarming engine?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi all - got an '87 Weekender, sold under the auspices of an 88, which one day, the day of a camping trip of course, refused to start. doesn't even get to the starter - just some clicking at the relay box when you turn the key. Now for the kicker. every few turns of the key, an alarm sounds, sometimes just one chirp, sometimes a whole string of 'em like someone forgot their alarm was on and tried to open the door. We didn't even know it had an alarm! We even got a chirp out of it just pushing it into the garage - the key wasn't even in the ignition! just a reminder, it was starting fine, brilliantly in fact before all this happened and no sign of chirping or alarming. So finally my question. 1.there's an alarm right? 2. how do I yank it out? 3. will yanking it solve my starting problems? 4. is this a short preventing starting or the actual function of the alarm? 5. Is there a way to start the van bypassing the ignition? I once heard that you could lay a screwdriver across the solenoid..... OK, so that's more than one question but anyway thanks ahead of time for the help.
