Hello My son just got his '87 syncro running for the first time and we took it out for a test ride last night. It runs pretty good but the tranny grinds pretty badly going up into third gear. Shifting 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th seem fine. No difficulty in shifting other than the grind! Is this just a syncronizer problem or is it likely the famed cracked 3rd gear problem? What is the range for repair/rebuild on the 5 speed syncro tranny? What would the cost be to just replace the 3rd gear syncro? In the event he cannot drive with nor afford to repair the tranny, can a 2WD 4 speed be easily installed in place of the 4WD tranny?
