As I mentioned earlier and privatly to Frank, the diesel oil pan on the 1.8, I-4, RV engine which I have installed into my '90 Vanagon is not sitting level on the aggregate and weeds that make up my driveway. I got serious today and determined the pulley end of the pan is about 40 mm. higher than the flywheel end after accounting for the 3.4% slope of the driveway. I got here by mounting the aft ends of the '83 carrier bars putting bolts through the lower sets of holes in the bar mounting flanges and into the captive/welded nuts in the rear frame. The upper sets of holes in the carrier's rear mounting flanges are roughly 50 mm. above the lower sets, and the oil pan would be quite close to level if I were to do the further clearancing needed for the intake manifold and installed the carriers using the upper sets of holes in the rear carrier flanges.

In a nutshell, my oil pan will be nearly level when the Vanagon is climbing a 10% grade. When I decend a 10% grade, the pulley end of the pan will be around 80 mm. higher than the front or canted as though the Vanagon is decending a 20% grade. Points in favor of the argument saying "not to worry" are: 1) I've installed a windage tray, 2) the engine won't labor much when descending anyway, and 3) I'll have an oil pressure gauge installed.

I would like to have some thoughts on this from others if I may, please.

-Dana-
