I would recommend at the very least bell wire or basic speaker wire.
Telephone cable is usually only single strand, very prone to breaking,
has a thin sheath which chafes easily and last but not least isn't very
thick so doesn't carry the soundy bits as well as thicker cable[1]

[1] For those that don't already know, electrical cables are actually
small tubes carrying electrical smoke, you can tell this because if
you try and throw too much electricity down the cables the tubes
burst and the smoke leaks out....
