No VW has ever had factory installed carbon core wires. Differences for the Vanagon depends on air or water cooled, then 83-88, then 89 later. The 89+ use the small pin connectors in the distributor cap. VW now only supplies the later wire sets. I've learned to buy the dealer sets as the after market do not seem to last. The ends either short to the shell or open up. Even the German ones. My Vanagon with 180K is still running the original set. Also, make sure you have the suppression shield on the cap. Later caps usually come with a new shield attached.

Some use solid core copper wires. The ones without electronic ignition. Vanagons with electronic ignition use carbon fiber wires. The spark plug end plug-on ends also have different resistance factors.
