Franks,

Sounds to me that the clutch plate got hot, and may have caused the
snap-ring to lose some of it's tension and pop out of it's retainer cut
in the hub.

Why did it get hot?

This one I can't answer--
pertrolis neglectis,, or you must have been hot rodding the van-----:>()

This one is a mystery .
