Hi,

Yesterday I attempted my first effort ever at servicing my CV joints. The van (87 syncro) had parked for a year while I was travelling and when we started it up, we were getting the tell tale clanking from the driver's side rear joints. It was pretty obvious that outter joint had lost all of its grease, so I went ahead and removed the drivers side rear half axle.

The joint that seemed to be in good condition (inner) came right off the axle, but the one that had lost all of the grease (outter) is stuck for all its worth. Ive tried plenty of WD-40, even soaked it overnight in kerosene, but no matter how hard I bang on it, it wont budge.

So I have a few questions:

Can anyone suggest how to get that sucker off?

Does the fact that the joint is frozen on the axle suggest that it the joint might be ruined?

How can you tell if the joint is ruined? I was able to get the outter housing piece and the bearings off..it all seems in good condition, but Im not sure.

I am assuming that I can just re-assemble what I have taken apart and put the axle back on without any problems if I cant get the other parts off.

I did drive for a few weeks with the clanking joint, didnt have the money or time to take care of it right when we got back in the country..its our only vehicle.

Thanks,

jg
