Subject: Automatic Transmission Fluid Leaking around Final Drive (84
              Vanagon)
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hello,

I need some diagnostic help.

My 84 Vanagon started leaking automatic transmission fluid about 3 weeks ago. Since then, its gone through 2.5 quarts of ATF in about 200 miles.

Most of the fluid seems to be leaking out of the oil pan of the final drive. I cleaned the transmission case where it meets the final drive, and there is some fluid visibly leaking there, too. After I stop driving, it leaks a tablespoon or two into my driveway.

There shouldn't be any ATF in the final drive, right? I suspect there is some seal at the rear of the automatic transmission that failed.

Thanks, Jonathan
