I don't intend to present myself as a VW guru but I'd suggest that your friend pick up a proper oil filter and oil drain plug washer for his new vehicle and change the oil (with the proper weight) before he starts his trip back. My reasoning for this is; if there are problems, he's bought his insurance by doing this. Secondly he'll better be able to diagnose any engine problems that happen with semi fresh oil to examine. As a secondary measure he should at least have his CV joints inspected (I've never seen a second hand Westy or Vanagon with properly serviced CV joints). Installation of a clean fuel filter and carry with him a bottle of chemical that removes water from the gas is also a good idea. Its in Murphy's hands after that.
