Hi all, Just had the exact same thing happen to me. My alternator was quite loose; essentially being held by the adjusting brackets above and sitting on its mounting stud below. My lower bracket is attached to the block over a stud on the left side (when looking at the engine from the bumper end) and with a bolt in the right side hole. I couldn't find the bolt for the right side, but really was lucky when trying the same size bolt as is used for the CV joints. I believe it is a 8x20 mm bolt. And for the right side stud I used the same size nut that would fit on a 8x20 bolt. This nut is the same as that holding the adjusting bracket to the engine. This was a real pain to replace. VERY difficult to get your hands under the bracket. But eventually I did. Took off the belts and completely loosened the alternator. Probably took me a little over an hour easily. I have a loose alternator on my 85 Westy 1.9 Wasserboxer. The lower bracket that bolts to the engine appears to be missing a bolt. My local VW guys want to replace it (P/N 025 903 141C) and the bolt that fastens it to the engine (P/N N 010 3753) for $21.95 and $1.85 respectively. This isn't bad, but they want 2 hours' labor -- $120. They say they are uncertain whether a) the bracket is broken or b) the bolt is broken off. My bet is that the bolt just came loose and fell out. So, my question is, can anyone supply me with the specs for this bolt so I can look for a replacement at the hardware store? Thanks immensely!
