Speaking of bike racks --- I too have been looking for a rack that would allow me to open the hatch without unloading the bikes. I had the additional restriction of a canoe on top of the Westy which ruled out any of the types that attach to the hatch (because the canoe hangs over the back). I already had a ball-type trailer hitch. I found a rack at Wal-Mart (to my surprise) that goes on the hitch and tilts down (with bikes attached). It holds three bikes on "arms" that are adjustable. While not carrying bikes the arms swing down parallel with the post off the hitch so they're don't project back. I've used it the last 2 weekends on short (200 mile round trip) camping trips and just love it. The best part is the price --- it was 80 Canadian bucks!! (regular price). I was surprised how easy it was to raise and lower the rack with three bikes attached ---- so I could unload the back of the van and worry about unloading the bikes in the morning. Check it out!! I've also found a Swagman rack that does the same thing for $180 CDN --- it's better quality but doesn't fold up when you don't have bikes on it. I think I'll stick to my Wally World bargain for now.
