I was having similar problems. The gas pedal (on my 84) is held with two screws into the floor at the base. When I investigated I found that the screws weren't holding anymore --- I could just pull the whole thing out. I put a couple of plastic wall plugs into the holes to give the screws something to bite to and that seemed to do the trick. Check it out..........
