We did the much same thing. I did a cardboard template of the screen and cut a
piece of no-see-um mesh about and inch bigger around. My wife machine-sewed seam
binding around it and then hand sewed the seam binding the zipper material. The
last 18 inches or so took the two of us to do -- one on either side passing the
needle back and forth. A PITA but the results were great. It can be done --- and
very cheaply too.
