Hey Everyone,
I have a couple problems that have came over my '87 Westy in the last two
weeks.  First a couple of weeks ago, while driving home from work, my van
started surging and hesitating.  The RPM's would bounce all over the place
in all gears and cont'd to do this until I got home.  Since then, I haven't
had the hesitation and surging happen again... Until last night that is, it
started to do the same thing surging and hesitating periodically throughout
the drive home.  I drove the van again this morning and it acted fine.

Now for the second problem I am having.  About a week ago, my van started to
be hard to put into first gear, all of the rest of the gears were easy to
get into, but first could be a real pain.  It seemed to get worse the longer
I drove her because when I first started driving her everyday, first gear
wouldn't be a problem to get into.  One time i noticed that there seemed to
be some play moving the gear shift back and forth sideways.  I only noticed
that sideways movement that once and can't reproduce it.

Could I get some advice as to what to check first?  Thanks alot for any
