Its your option to take it out or not. In most cases it is too brittle to be reinstalled. The new chrome is available and I've been told you can get in black too. Its difficult to install but there is a special tool that is a big help if you decide to install the new molding. You can get the molding from several of the list vendors. I reinstalled OEM type molding in my rear window and it cost $16.00 for the chrome stuff and about two hours to install it without the special tool.
