Matthew,

I have a set of BFGoodrich light truck tyres on mine, 8ply, 195R14LT.

'LT' tyres are standard fittment for all commercial type vehicles in Aus, and handle the rough roads well, with no weight problems. Car tyres might grip bitumen better, but I don't think it's worth the risk. I travel daily on bad dirt roads and have found the BFG's great.

Several dedicated off road tyres are available in 195R14LT, but can be expensive. I know dunlop sell one here. The syncro guys should know.

Take care + have fun, Ian
