My friend Scott owned a 1981 Westy that had been published in one of the VW mags back in the late '80's or early '90's. I have seen the article posted at one of the links from vanagon.com. It's PO was a Porsche mechanic in LA who wanted to pull his boat with it or something, so he dropped a 911 turbo 6 (built for racing) into it.

Totally stock on the outside except for some unflashy MBZ rims. It was that poopy cinnamon color (sorry, just mho). But man, the sound it made! I think it was the the 1st Vanagon I ever road in & it is to blame for my being sucked into the lifestyle. I can't remember what the 0-60 or other stats were, but it was so fast it was scarey! It could burn rubber in 2 gears easy & if you shifted close to redline, it would belch fire just like the race cars. It could blow away GTI's & keep up with a stock 911.

We had that thing well over 100MPH several times & it always felt like it had a lot more in it, but worried that it would get airborne if we went over 120.

My friend bought it in Portland, OR from the 2nd owner about 8 years ago & sold it a year or 2 later here in Seattle. I see it around every couple of years so I think it's still running. Is the Current owner on the list? If so, let's hear more about it, my memory may be a bit off. I seem to remember that it was a 2.5L with over 250HP? Maybe that 3.3L Subaru 6 in Tacoma would be a good match for it. Drag race anyone?

That's all.

Ciao,
