Captain Morgan (cc:d to Vanagon list for reasons unknown)-
Not an uncommon problem. Replace the 1970's era bus with a Vanagon, and the
whistle will go away...
Oh, it is so tempting so be a smart aleck and simply send that as a
response, but I am trying to turn over a less smart-alecky leaf.
You need to have your most trusted friend drive your van, while you take a
4' length of garden hose (or similar), and a noise-reducing ear-plug, and
hop in the passenger seat. Fasten you seat belts, and don't drive drunk.
Have your buddy, girlfriend, mob-boss, warden, bondsman, sex slave or
whomever drive the bus in the same manner you do when you hear the whistle.
Next, you take that garden hose and start smacking them silly. No, wait,
that's wrong.
Next, you take that garden hose and (placing one end up to your ear, and
plugging your other ear with the ear plug), start listening around where you
*think* the sound is coming from. Don't be surprised if the sound is coming
from somewhere OTHER THAN where you think it is, like under the sink, or
under the passenger seat or somewhere over the rainbow, way up high. Sound
in the old loaf has a way of bouncing around in weird ways.
Next, when you find where the sound is coming from, light an incendiary
signal flare to mark the spot. No, wait, that's wrong. Replace the 1970's
era bus with a Vanagon, and the whistle will go away... or, plug the whole
that is making the whistle.
If it turns out it IS the wing vent window, replace the rubber around the
window with new rubber, available nearly free of charge from West Coast
Metric. You'll find this to be a fun project which will entertain the notion
of selling your bus, or taking up another hobby.
Cheers, happy motoring, and look for us in a White 1982 Westfalia which
doesn't whistle, but it does hum,
