Subject: The enemy: Gas tank leak
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252"
Hi All,
Well this weekend's project was to fix the leaky gas tank. All went smooth
on the disassembly except I broke my favorite tool (old dental chisel). I
cleaned everything up put in the new grommets and filler seal. But the
problem appeared to be the fuel sender seal so I cleaned that up. And who
would have a 58 x 4 o-ring at 6:00 labor day night..... well I rode into
town on my bike (5+ miles) and got some hose clamps and the graphite for the
o-ring. I decided to go by our local Harmony Motors (the VW place in town)
and Mark the owner (great guy) was there and I got one!!!!!!!!!! So back to
the assembly. Who ever recommended the soap idea... well believe me it
worked great. However, the guy who engineered this set up must have only
been about 6 inches tall because my fat fingers and arms had a difficult
time getting it all back together but I over came. Well then I rush down to
filler up... and I get gas everywhere. I stick my hand up under there and
find that the T fitting on the driver's side is the leaker. Tomorrow I plan
to drop the driver side wheel and remove the coolant hose bracket and try to
put two hose clamps on the T fitting.
If this fails has anyone or can you change the crossover tube without
dropping the tank?
Thanks in advance.
