Very good question. I mean, even here in Yoorp, your typical coffeemaker/car shaver/dashboard fan/radar detector/phone charger/vacuum cleaner/cooler/breakdown light comes with a cigarette lighter plug, not with the silver thingy. Yet we get the silver socket on our Westies too. At least, my '84 had it. The '90 doesn't anymore. Maybe VW mistakenly believes that these sockets are useful to North Americans?
