Subject: Infared Thermometer/Radiator temps?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Someone posted that they had used an infared thermometer to test for hot and cold spots on the Vanagon radiator. I have temporary access to one of these and was wondering:

1. How accurate can the readings be with the AC coil in front of the radiator. My coils isn't functional at the present time)?

2. When checking the various spots on the radiator for temp. differentials, what's considered okay and what's considered excessive? 3. Any numbers come from those that have donw this? Where I could get to the real radiator, I got an average of 10 degrees F difference, low of 160 and a high in one spot of 175. This was measuring during a burp session with the cooling system and after the fan had cycled a couple times. I do have some orage crusty stuff stating to show on the driver's side of the crimp, so I may need a radiator in the near future. Van runs just at the op ofthe red light on the gauge, but internal temp sensor in the Haltech FI says the coolant in the small hose that runs from the #4 water jacket, has never gotten over 208F.

Thanks for the help
