Subject: A/C thermostat switch..clicking and A/C not working

Volks, your wisdom please, I've been battling the A/C for a couple weeks and I now have a situation where when I turn on the A/C with the switch in dash, the thermostat switch in rear pillar clicks and compressor does not engage. This is in addition to a situation where the condensor fan does not turn on when I switch on the A/C. The A/C system was recently charged with 16oz. R-12 by an A/C guy at the local auto-air-and-audio shop. Yeah, I took the Bentley and showed him which valve did what and gave him the specs on the system requirements as I always have to now. So... any thoughts? Too much pressure on the high side? I'm not an A/C pro but I'm thinking about taking an online course and picking up a set of gauges to check things just like this.

Your words of kindness and brutal honesty are always appreciated.
