It could be the Hall sender and/or the ECU.

The black plastic under the bottom of my Hall was broken off causing an intermittant short to the dist body. Would quit running, wouldn't start, etc., similar to your problems.

The wiring plug for the sender felt solid and did not wiggle. It was a real pain with a voltmeter to track down an intermittant problem. It eventually fried my ECU.

The tach needle should bounce while cranking. Mine usually would. About the time I would decide to try my shotgun, it would start and idle until my foot touched the throttle, then it would die again and not start.

You can try swapping in a new ECU, which is a lot easier that changing out the Hall unit. ECUs are supposed to be very dependable but have a tendency to crack at the solder joints.
