Interestingly, I have reached the same conclusions, with one important enhancement: I use a free mail account for my vanagon list. This way I have all the filtering capabilities without the need to download all the messages to my PC. I can just view the headers and delete the uninteresting ones in a flash. Of course, the archiving capacity is limited (6MB), but that's enough for about 2-3 weeks of traffic. For archiving, I rely on the vanagon archives. Email searches are very convenient. Even though they're slow, I don't mind as long as I don't have to wait like I did on the web search (which didn't work most of the time due to extreme delays).
