Does your Vanagon have 666 anywhere in it's ID number? Sounds like it didn't want to go to church.

It's behind your instrument cluster. Reach over to the front (towards the windshield). Grab the finger grooves and pop the cluster cover upwards and towards you. There is a plastic sheet covering the MC.
