I have been using a couple of LED bike lights in my westy. Brand name "Planet Bike", the white LED units (single white LED, about Can$9, white LEDs still much more expensive than amber or red) mount on the pop top "crossbar" and they do a good job throwing a narrow beam to read by.

Hella makes LED lights for marine applications (see West Marine web site/catalog). They group the LEDs in 3, in both a round and an oval format (both for flush mounting). Price around $30, the reds and ambers a little cheaper, the white a little more...

IMHO, the LED lights are best for "spot" lighting or companionway lighting. But i really like how my single white units illuminate the page I'm reading and not the whole upper bunk.
