Subject: Diesel Westy Temp. Guage Questions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1"

Diesel Westy Fans,

One last question for now. Anyone know where the temp. needle should ride on a diesel Westy? Mine has been riding to the right of the red light - varying between the edge of the light and about halfway between the light and the far right of the gauge. To date, the red light has not come on - although this seems a little far up the gauge to me. FYI, the V-belt is good and tight, the coolant new, and the fan motor appears to be working - as the needle dips every so often (although I NEVER hear the fan, which seems very strange given my cockpit seating.....) I've read in the vanagon archives the fan motor never seem to kick on, so I think (read: hope) that I'm OK here.

If I'm in the OK zone, cool. If not, perhaps the following applies?

Am I getting some blockage somewhere in the lines that has caused a blockage? I seem to recall, from my experiences in a Wasserboxer years ago, that these watercooled vanagons need to have the front end jacked up a certain height when filling the coolant system. At least the gassers did, is this also true w/ the Diesel?

Also, if the red light were to come on, does it flash like it does at start up, or just glow solidly?

THANKS! John
