Subject: Removing Stuck 1.6L Diesel Injector Heat Shields - Any Ideas?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1"

Volks,

OK, one more question. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the two stuck heat shields out of my diesel Westy? (I found some replacements here in town, much to my pleasure!) Not sure if the culprits are carboned in there beyond all recall - or if they're just forced in to too tight of a space. (My guess, and I'm missing a lot of fingerprint to prove it, is a little of each.) I've tried gently tapping down on the shields (brass washers basically), w/o any luck. I've stopped short of digging in their w/ a fish hook, not being able to deal w/ a broken hook on the road. Short of pulling the head upon my return home, any ideas? (Perhaps driving the vehicle a little ways with the injectors on, but not torqued????) I'm wondering if the pressure would loosen them up a bit. Someone emailed me saying the factory used to make a heat shield similar to these - but the two I've pulled out appear to have been spun on a lathe based on the appearance of the outside edge.... :-(

Thanks, John
