To settle a debate I started several months ago: Yes, the aluminum engine block can be safely welded, providing the welder knows what he or she is doing. A Heliarc welder and Alloy #5356 are what's needed. Info source is a highly reputable (primarily VW aircooled) engine rebuilder in Seattle, who welded shut some holes in my case.
