not that interesting after last week's Tuesday but anyway: Sunday morning I found the real reason for the above 'sound' of my (86 Quantum, 220kmi) 2nd gear at half load: the 3rd gear on the main shaft touched the 2nd on the pinion shaft. Both had .35mm axial play - already too much. Assuming they had .1 when new, the clearance was just .5mm! Designed to break? or brake? Now wondering if the van trans also are that tight...
