Marie, With the cost being a problem, it's the best option you have. Mine is a 84 with a 1.9L engine that suffers from the same condition and I have a appointment with my mechanic, me, in two weeks to do the job. It seems these engines have about 200,00 good miles in them but the heads are the weak point and many have done what he's described. Also he's already done a friends so he should know the procedure.
