Tricia, I ran into this problem two or three times after purchasing my '87 Westy
new, way back in the last millennium. My solution was to have a propane nozzle
extension made at a local propane supply company. It fits on the end of the
propane nozzle and allows easy connection to the van's propane tank for fillup
purposes. I carry it in the van for those times when the propane tank needs
filling and the propane station doesn't have the proper fittings to allow access
to the tank's fillup valve. The extension cost about $30 ten years ago but it's
saved the day many times.
