I've gotten so much good advice from you all...more questions...are you suppose to just turn the key and the vanagon starts? Sometimes when I turn the key, it starts...other times it doesn't. When it doesn't, I just step on accelator a few times, and it starts. Is this a sign of needing a new starter or when it isn't used in awhile, you are suppose to give it gas before you start?

Also I suspect I might have a major problem after reading some msgs from list about coolant. Never had any coolant leak that I know of. Got smog test and person showed me coolant leak under van when running. Sure enough after using I notice a coolant leak coming on right side of engine in van. Also my coolant resvorior is now lower. I took a mirror to look. Since I don't know much about cars, I see a small pinhole leak on this square metal box. It looks like the seam of metal box is where this pinhole leak is from. Oh no, is this major?
