<P>Lynn: along with what's been suggested I submit the following: no mechanic here so take that into consideration; these are also symptoms of catalytic converter problems, I THINK! When they get clogged, for whatever reason, they mess with the heat sensor on them which is connected to the computer regulating fuel/air mixture. Your fuel is obviously running rich evidenced by the black smoke/unburned fuel, which further complicates the converter malfunction, if it is that. It takes about 30-45 minutes to change one of these, depending on the condition of the bolts holding it in place, but it is easy to access. Have no idea how you might come by a converter to "try on" to see if it's that. Best wishes. </P>
