What you're seeing is the difference between the 12mm and the 11mm bolts. The 12mm are stretch bolts and should always be replaced.

I just bought a head from a list member of the diesel group, and it looks like he used the 12mm head with an older 11mm block. It's probably not ideal, but I bet it would work fine. Just make sure you have everything lined up. Ideally, you would use the right head on the right block. My understanding is that sometime people have sleeves put in the holes to make them a bit smaller. That might not be absolutely necessary however.

Make sure you determine if you have strech bolts on the connecting rod caps. Chances are, you do not, judging from the fact that you've got the older 11mm head bolts.

I've never bought a gasket kit, but I think it comes with everything you need. Double check on all the oil seals though.

The intermediate shaft bearing can be replaced. I bought mine from Jack at vwdieselparts.com. Good guy. I went to my local hardware store and bought a large washer, bolt, and two nuts. I measured the washer very precisely- large enough to push the bearing through the bore, but not too large as to hit the bore. I put a nut on the end of the large bolt, slide on the washer, then another bolt. I used that to tap out the old bearing. I tapped in the new bearing using the same tool. I then used emory cloth and machinists blue to fit the new bearing.

Some people say- always replace the pilot bearing (it should still be in the end of your crank shaft). Some people say just clean it up with a good solvent and press on.

Using a small floor jack, an engine hoist (rented) and jack stands, I removed and installed the engine myself. Put it in from below. Slide it under, then hoist it up into place. Use a jack under the tranny end. It's almost too easy. Well worth the cost of renting a hoist!!!!

Feel free to contact me directly!
