Subject: High Idle, Next step
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Okay, so I checked the idle switch on the throttle body, and it was indeed making contact only sporadically. I sprayed contact cleaner into the switch and adjusted it as best I could and put back together. I was only able to guess the gap there because the feeler guage I have is too thick. Will purchase new feeler guage soon.

However, there is another problem with the throttle body. It does not want to go back all the wayto the position where it closes the circuit unless I give it a snap. In other words, if I just let up on the accelerator pedal, it will not move far enough back to close the switch. Is this the way it is supposed to work? I tried spraying contact cleaner on the assembly, and then WD40, but still the same. Do the throttle bodies go bad, or just need to be thoroughly cleaned?

Now that I have fixed the switch, my idle behaves as follows: Instead of steady 1800RPM when warm, it now surges between 1200 and 1300 rpm, with a slow rise, and then a quick fall. What do I check next?

In my previous post I said there was an open contact on the A/C compressor. Actually, I was smoking crack at the time, and meant to say that it was on the p/s pump. There is a brown lead off the bottom connector of a switch that screws into the pressure line of the p/s pump., and no connector on the top spade connector on the switch. My bently shows no switch in the p/s system, nor can I find it in the ignition/ fuel chapters. Should there be a wire here?

Once again, Thanks for all your help. Peter & Zippy
