Subject: the inevitable "help me install my tachometer!" installation
question

well i don't if anybody else saw this coming, but i knew my time would come.
so here goes:
as i mentioned in a recent post, i just purchased a late model Vanagon
instrument cluster w/ tach from a fellow list member. while i waited for
it's arrival, i studied previous posts from the archives and Bentley wiring
diagrams galore, so as not to have to bug the list folks unnecessarily
(stupid questions give people headaches, i've been told ).
well, it arrived. and after a helpful point in the right direction by
several list members (in regards to the universal digital clock fit of late
model VWs), i was back from the local VW shop/junkyard with both a
replacement clock and shift knob from an 89 or so Jetta. thanks to all the
list members who offered these parts in response to my query, but these were
free and fast and you can't beat that.
the speedometer was/is broken, but i'd been planning to use the speedometer
from my 82 anyway, so i thought, "no big deal."
ENTER THE PROBLEM.
what do i do about the extra circuit tape and plug that was attached to the
circuit board inside the newer speedometer? mine has
no such contraption. i took the speedo mounting plate off of my
speedometer to see if i could drop the gauge into the newer mounting plate
(the one with circuit board), but no dice. they're a totally different
design. well, they're not totally different. they're just different enough
to make it impossible to do that, at present. can you leave that circuit
section flying free, or should some sort of jumper arrangement be made?
Vanagon geniuses of the world, UNITE! (and help jason out, if you would)
i'll pass the time by starting the wire from the coil.
thanks in advance,
jason
