Dear List,

I am aware of these "add on" oil cooler extensions -- several companies sell them. My problem with them is that they literally extend the oil filter dimensions so that I will have to deal with coolant hose interferance. (or install a shorter/smaller oil filter)

A more elegant solution will be to replace the oil filter flange itself, while keeping the pancake oil-water heat exchanger and maintaining the geometry/dimensions so that I don't have to deal with coolant hose interferance.

So the big question is this: *****which model VW motor has/had a flange with oil cooler connections that will install in place of the current flange on my TDI???*****

You can see a pix of a Golf 1 GTI flange (not sure this would fit) here: http://www.htu.at/~sascha/t3/oelkuehler/17.jpg

Cheers, MJS

A customer of mine who says he is using an Audi 5000 oil cooler from their 2.3L engine - it fastens on to the oil filter flange the same way the current WATER->OIL one does. I am not sure if there is a thermostat built into it or not.

Also the VW Iltis 1.6TD has an external AIR->OIL cooler that is the same as the early GTI ones. I think there are some TD Audi models Europe that have the same parts.

Dear List,

Anyone know of the availabilty of used Golf/Rabbit (4 cylinder) GTI oil coolers here in North America?

I'm mostly interested in just the GTI oil-filter flange with built-in thermostat and connections for oil-cooler radiator. I guess I could always just order one from VW, but you know what that means...

I would like to modify said GTI oil-filter flange to improve the performance of my stock, under-performing TDI sandwich oil cooler as used in my Vanagon conversion. Got the idea from this German Vanagon TD owner: http://www.htu.at/~sascha/t3/oelkuehler.htm

Any information or leads greatly appreciated.

Cheers, MJS
