There is a little known problem of static electricity building up on the AFM. One day while traveling in the southwest my van began to do this very same thing and I was lucky enough to come upon a competent dealer that knew of what he called VW's undeclared recall item that consisted of a fancy ground cable. This unit served to shunt unwanted electrical build-up from the AFM. The dealer said the problem occured more on fall/winter days when it was cold out. Probably something you could ground yourself, it cost about $120 at the time.
