I re-adjusted my valves again, going back to essentially zero pre-load. Earlier this summer I had adjusted them this way and the engine ran way better--power, cold starts, idle. My only complaint was slight valve train noise, kind of like an OHC engine without hydraulic lifters. So I decided to go back over them and try for 1/2 turn. Right away I noticed several things. Cold starts were not as good. It seemed to crank noticeably slower. The worst thing was, I would still get clacking from time to time! So now I am back to zero lash, or maybe 1/16th turn. I backed off the adjuster, then tightened until I felt it touch, and then turned it just slightly more. Jay '85 Westy "The Hindenburg" |
