For what it's worth,
I vote for removing the big axle nut for rear brake work. It's easy once you've done it a time or two.
My hub was really stuck to the drum so it didn't come off very easily when I tried to just remove the drum piece. I think the actual brake work may be easier with the axle nut and hub removed also. I can't say for sure because I didn't do it that way. My $.02, Mark Ingalls 85 GL 75 Beetle
