I got some initial advice from a list member but maybe I can get some assistance in a more definitive diagnosis. I have a 1985 Westy which is giving me drivability problems. The Westy always starts up instantly when left overnight. For a while it was a clear case of when it warmed up it would not want to restart until it cooled down some. Now it sometimes stutters and appears to die when accelerating after slowing down from longer runs. Is this a classic case of needing the cable/capacitor fix or is it the mass air flow sensor or maybe something else with the fuel injection? I had it to the service shop but as the problem is intermittent Murphy was alive and it didn't happen for them. I changed out the fuel filter. It sounds and feels like the fuel pump is ok but I have not actually tested its flow rate. If I can isolate the problem to the MAF, fuel pump, or some component I can probably replace it but trying to figure out fuel injection is way above my tools and understanding. Is this a dealer only/VW specialist fix or can a regular mechanic sort it out? |
