I know, sorry for the fast repetition rate, but it's simply dangerious driving without a proper driver's side mirror (although I have another two in the center and passenger side). It keeps moving...

Wow, if I don't read my vanagon mail alamost daily the account overflows...;-)

Yep, these mirrors are a blessing - and a curse...

I wonder why the nut came lose and what holds it in place. Loctite?

My van is 11 years old and this has happened for the first time. May I suggest that you check that your nuts are tight (oops, no pun intented...;-) to avoid finding yourself in the same situation. It's quite easy to do if you remove the bottom plastic cap (the one that hides the third bottom screw).
