Thanks for the kind offer, but let me suggest you don't even come near this "hornet nest". It might prove extremely hard to put back due to the strong spring inside. I've found a single post in the archives addressing this problem, and he mentioned he had to leave out a plastic washer to manage. Anyway, I know how to do it exactly, just don't have the proper tool and experience with the right "trick" to do it.

That's a good idea. I was thinking about some kind of epoxy but was reluctant to do something ireversible, but the good ol' duct tape method should give a temporary fix (although it won't prevent the mirror from being torn off by a thief which worries me just as much...the only think holding it there are the wires.
